I can fix it if I go to the client and modify the pcst_canonical_permalink custom field which does not automatically include the %category%. Other than modifying the client what can I do to make the back link work??

Your AJAX handler would check that the nonce is valid and that the current user has the proper capability to update posts. You would want to use AJAX for this, otherwise there will be nothing "quick" about it.
